"When I mentioned that I had a heart murmur, my Dentist told me that I would need to take antibiotics before he could do a cleaning. My physician said I was Ok and I feel fine- why was she making such a big deal out of a simple cleaning?"
Answer:
While patients who have heart murmurs can lead normal lives, there is a certain risk involved when performing any dental procedure that could cause the mouth to bleed. If the bacteria in your mouth infiltrate your bloodstream they could lead to an infection called bacterial endocarditis- a potentially fatal infection of the heart. To reduce the risks of getting endocarditis, your Dentist will prescribe antibiotics which you should take before any potentially risky procedure. This is called 'premedicating' and will ensure that your cleaning remains what it should be... simple! There are many other conditions that would lead a Dentist to require premedication before treatment. Be sure and fill out your Medical History Questionnaire completely.
